Understanding Your AI Business Digest: A Guide for Salon Owners
A weekly AI-written summary of your salon's performance: revenue, bookings, retention, and personalised recommendations
In this guide
Most salon owners know they should review their numbers regularly, but between clients, team management, and everything else, it rarely happens. The AI business digest does the reviewing for you. Every week, it analyses your key metrics, compares them to the previous period, and writes a plain-English summary of what happened and what to do about it.
This guide explains what the digest covers, how to read it, and how to turn its recommendations into action.
What the AI business digest is
The digest is an AI-generated weekly report delivered to your inbox. It analyses your salon's performance data (revenue, appointments, client retention, cancellations, no-shows, and online booking rates) and produces a written summary tailored to your business.
Unlike a static dashboard, the digest interprets the numbers for you. It highlights what went well, flags what needs attention, and offers specific recommendations based on your data. Think of it as having a business analyst review your week and send you a brief the morning after it ends.
The digest is generated automatically, so there's nothing to configure to start receiving it. It starts once your business is on a paid plan and has been with Bella Booking for at least two weeks. Until you've booked 10 appointments in Bella, it stays on your dashboard instead of being emailed.
What metrics it covers
The digest analyses six core metric areas, each compared to the previous period to show direction and magnitude of change. A weekly digest also compares the week with your own four-week average, in one line under the figures, once each of the four weeks before it has appointments and they add up to at least 30.
| Metric | What it measures | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | Total income from sales rung through Checkout (services, products, and packages). If you take payment outside Bella, the digest shows appointment value instead: the value of what was booked | The bottom line: are you earning more or less than last period? |
| Bookings | Appointments in the period, not counting cancellations or no-shows | Volume indicator: is demand growing or shrinking? |
| Client retention | How many of the clients you saw already have their next appointment booked (your rebooking rate), plus regulars who are overdue for a visit | Loyalty health: a dropping rate means fewer clients are booking their next visit |
| Cancellations | Number and rate of cancelled appointments (excluding no-shows) | Reliability indicator: high rates may signal policy or experience issues |
| No-shows | Number and rate of clients who didn't turn up | Separate from cancellations: different cause, different solution |
| Online booking rate | Percentage of bookings made through your online page | Efficiency metric: online bookings save reception time and reduce errors |
Whenever the written summary quotes a rate, it gives the counts beside it. You'll see "3 cancellations out of 42 appointments (7%)" rather than just "7% cancellation rate". The context prevents a single event from looking more alarming than it is.
When your salon is new or has low appointment volume, some rates are suppressed entirely. A cancellation rate calculated from 5 appointments is statistically meaningless. The digest shows the raw count instead and waits until you have enough data for rates to be reliable.
How maturity tiers work
Not every salon is at the same stage. A brand-new salon with 20 appointments in its first month needs encouragement and foundational advice. An established salon with hundreds of appointments per week needs sharp, data-driven insights. The digest adjusts its tone and recommendations based on where your business sits.
The three maturity tiers
| Tier | Typical profile | Digest tone |
|---|---|---|
| Early | New to Bella Booking, limited data history | Supportive and low-key: treats week-to-week swings as noise and avoids verdicts or alarm words |
| Emerging | Consistent bookings, several months of data | Balanced: points out emerging patterns and things to watch, without calling one week a trend |
| Mature | Strong data history, high appointment volume | Direct and analytical: firmer language where the numbers support it, still without exaggeration |
Your tier is set automatically from how long you've been using Bella Booking and how many appointments you've booked in it (imported history doesn't count). As your data grows, you'll naturally progress through the tiers. There's nothing to configure.
If your salon is new, don't worry if early digests feel lighter on data. The AI deliberately avoids drawing conclusions from small samples. As your appointment history builds, the insights become progressively sharper and more actionable.
When the digest is delivered
The digest covers your business's own week, set by Week starts on under Settings > Business settings. That's Monday to Sunday for most businesses and Sunday to Saturday in the US and Canada, unless you change it. Bella writes the digest after 10pm on the last day of your week and usually emails it the next morning. This gives you a complete picture of the previous week at the start of the new one.
It goes to the owners and admins on your team and also appears in the notification bell. The email contains the full digest, so there's no need to log in to read it. Your latest digest also sits on your dashboard, and a week too quiet to say much about stays there instead of being emailed.
Reading the digest
The digest opens with your key figures for the week and a short written summary of what changed and why. Three kinds of notes follow, and the whole digest is designed to be read in under three minutes.
Highlights
Highlights call out what went well beyond the figures at the top: a run of five-star reviews, strong gift card sales, or the likely reason behind a busy week. They tell you what's working so you can do more of it.
Concerns
Concerns flag areas that need attention: a dip in rebooking, an uptick in cancellations, or a setup gap such as deposits switched on before online payments are connected. Each concern includes context: what changed, by how much, and what might be driving it.
Insights and recommendations
Recommendations are specific, actionable steps based on the data, with the most important first. These might include switching on a feature you're not using or adjusting your cancellation policy. Each one is tied to something in your data, such as a rate that moved or a setting that is missing.
A typical digest excerpt
Bookings are up on last week, but last week was a quiet one: against your four-week average, this was a normal week. The bigger story is rebooking. Only 5 of 55 clients have their next visit booked, and the reminder to rebook is still switched off. Turning it on is the easiest way to change that.
Acting on recommendations
The digest is most valuable when you act on at least one recommendation each week. Don't try to address everything. Pick the highest-impact item and focus on that.
- 1Read the full digest and identify the single most actionable recommendation
- 2Check whether the suggested action is something you can do immediately (e.g., adjusting a reminder time) or needs planning (e.g., revising your cancellation policy)
- 3Implement the change before your next week begins
- 4Watch the following week's digest to see whether the metric moved in the right direction
- 5If it did, move on to the next recommendation. If not, dig deeper or ask Bella AI for more context
Treat the digest as a weekly coaching session. One small change a week is easier to keep up than a big overhaul, and the next digest shows whether it worked.
Configuring delivery preferences
By default, the digest is emailed to everyone on your team with the Owner or Admin role, at the email address on their profile. Other roles can't receive it, because it includes your business's financial figures. Each owner or admin can turn it off for themselves: open the notification bell, click the gear icon for My notification preferences, untick Summary email and save. To change it for someone else on your team:
- 1Go to Settings > Team notifications
- 2Open the owner or admin you want to change
- 3Under Notification types, tick or untick Summary email
- 4Click Save notification preferences
Your latest digest also sits on your dashboard. To look back at earlier weeks, ask Bella AI: it can bring up any past digest and compare several, so you can track how your metrics have evolved over time.
Asking Bella AI about past digests
Bella AI has access to your digest history, which means you can ask follow-up questions about anything the digest mentioned. This turns a static weekly email into an interactive analysis tool.
- •"What did last week's digest say about cancellations?"
- •"Has our retention rate improved over the last month?"
- •"What were the highlights from this week's digest?"
- •"Show me the revenue trend from the last four digests"
Bella AI can pull data from your digest history and your live business data simultaneously. This lets you ask contextual questions like "The digest flagged a drop in retention. Which clients haven't rebooked?" and get a specific, actionable answer.
If a digest recommendation isn't clear, ask Bella AI to explain it. "Why did the digest recommend changing my reminder timing?" will give you the underlying data and reasoning.
