Payments & Deposits

Which salon software has built-in tipping?

Fresha, Square, Vagaro, Phorest, Booksy, Mangomint and Boulevard all have built-in tipping. What differs is where the client is asked and who is credited.

Which platforms have built-in tipping, and what kind

Almost every platform on a salon shortlist takes tips. The differences are in the shape of it: where the client gets asked, who the money is credited to, and whether anyone on your team can be left out.

There are three places a client can be asked for a tip, and most platforms only do one or two of them. A prompt on the payment device catches the client while they are still with you. A prompt after the appointment reaches the client who paid in cash, or who left in a hurry. A prompt during online booking collects the tip before the work has happened, which some owners like and some find awkward.

Every competitor row was read from that vendor's own help centre or feature page on 2 September 2026, and the Bella Booking rows from the code that runs the feature. "Not verified" means the pages we opened that day did not say, which is a different thing from the platform not doing it. Help centres get rewritten often, so open the vendor's current page before you decide anything on the strength of a table.

The second question is where the money lands. On a two-person appointment, a tip that is split by a fixed rule and a tip the client hands to one named person are very different for morale, and only one of them survives a conversation about who did the blow-dry.

PlatformWho the tip is credited toCan a team member opt out
Bella BookingThe team member the client picks. Each person on the appointment is offered separatelyYes, an Accept tips toggle on the team member's profile
FreshaSplit proportionally by the value of the services each team member providedNot verified
Square AppointmentsNot verified on the pages checkedNot verified
VagaroPaid into the merchant account of the owner or the provider who did the service; split automatically by service price where there are several merchant accounts, or split by hand at checkoutNot verified
GlossGeniusNot verified on the pages checkedNot verified
TimelyTerminal tips: not stated. The no-terminal workaround puts a Tip product line on the invoice against a chosen staff memberNot verified
PhorestThe feature page says tips go "automatically and instantly to the service provider(s) who worked on the client"Not verified
BooksyNot verified on the pages checkedNot verified
MangomintSplit automatically by the services each staff member performed, or a custom split; part of a tip can be assigned to an assistantNot verified
BoulevardNot verified on the pages checkedNo. The support centre says "at this time, Boulevard does not support provider-specific gratuity settings"
MindbodyThe client chooses a tip for each staff member who performed a serviceNot verified

Timely is worth reading twice. Its help centre is direct about the limit: without a TimelyPay or Tap to Pay terminal "there is not a purpose-built solution for managing client tips", and the documented workaround is to create a product called Tip and add it to the invoice. That is a fair answer for a salon that already has the hardware and a poor one for a salon that does not.

What to check before you shortlist on tipping

Six things separate tipping that gets used from tipping that sits switched on and empty.

Where the client is asked

Match the prompt to how your clients actually pay. If almost everyone taps a card at the desk, a terminal prompt will collect more than an email link ever will. If you take deposits online and settle the rest by bank transfer, or you work solo from a chair with no terminal, the prompt has to reach the client on their own phone or it reaches nobody.

Who the tip belongs to

Ask what happens on an appointment with two people on it. Some platforms split by the value of the services each person did, some let the front desk split by hand, and some let the client choose a person. A rule you cannot override causes arguments the first time an assistant does most of the work.

Whether a team member can be left out

Reception, management and some clinical roles should not be offered for tips at all. Boulevard says plainly that gratuity is a business-wide setting and its support article recommends telling clients in advance to skip the screen, and refunding a tip taken by mistake. If your team includes anyone who should not be tipped, ask this question before you sign.

What the reports hand to payroll

Tips are income and someone has to pay them out. A tips figure buried in a sales total is worth much less than a report grouped by team member over a date range that exports to CSV. Ask to see the export, not the dashboard.

Which plan it sits on

Tipping is often bundled with something else: a payment terminal, a payments product, a higher tier. Booksy's post-appointment tipping needs Booksy Payments and Booksy Pay. Phorest's PhorestTips comes with PhorestPay. Bella Booking's tipping travels with client reviews on the Professional plan. Work out the real monthly cost of getting tipping, not the headline price of the plan you were shown.

Who absorbs the processing fee

A card tip carries the same processing rate as any other card payment. Either the business absorbs it, the team member absorbs it, or it is added on top of the client's charge. Find out which, because on a $10 tip the difference is small and on a year of tips it is not.

How tipping works in Bella Booking

Bella Booking does the post-appointment kind. Once an appointment has been checked out, a "Leave a review & tip" button appears on that appointment in the client's online booking account. The page lists the team members who worked on the appointment, each with $5, $10 and $20 presets and a custom field, and the tip is paid on its own secure checkout page. The client does not need a saved card, and nothing about how you took payment for the service itself changes.

  1. 1Connect your payment account, then switch Tipping on at Settings > Payments
  2. 2Tipping travels with client reviews, a Professional-plan feature, because the tip prompt lives inside the review-and-tip flow
  3. 3Switch Accept tips off on any team member's profile if tipping is not right for their role, and they are not offered in the prompt

Each tip is recorded against the appointment, the client and one team member, so a colourist and a stylist on the same appointment are tipped separately and see their own amounts. A client can tip a given team member once per appointment, and a custom amount is capped at 500 in your business's currency. Tips appear on the appointment in the scheduler, in the client's payment history, and in the Tips summary report, which groups by team member or by day and compares against an earlier period; the by-day view exports to CSV, and you can filter it to one team member first.

Your payment provider's standard processing rate applies to a tip like any other card payment. If you pass processing fees on to clients, the fee is added on top of the tip charge and the team member receives the full amount; otherwise it comes out of the tip. When a tip is paid, the business gets an entry in the notification centre, plus an email and SMS if those are switched on, and the message template carries the tip amount and the team member's name. TipReceived is also one of the notification types each team member can turn on for themselves.

Bella Booking has no tip prompt at the counter or on a card terminal. Tips are taken online, after the appointment, from the client's own phone. If most of your tips arrive while the client is still standing at the desk, weigh that against the platforms in the first table that put the prompt on the payment device.

This page compares platforms. For what digital tipping is and how it works in general, read "How do I accept tips in salon software?". For the click-by-click setup in Bella Booking, read the guide "How to Set Up Digital Tipping in Your Salon". Both are linked below.

Questions worth asking a vendor

Take these to a demo. The answers separate the platforms quickly, and every one of them is a question a salesperson can answer on the call.

  • Where exactly does the client see the tip prompt, and can you show me on a live account?
  • On a two-person appointment, who decides how the tip is split?
  • Can a specific team member be left out of the tip prompt entirely?
  • Can a client add a tip after they have left, and for how long?
  • What does the tips report look like, and what does the CSV export contain?
  • Which plan is tipping on, and does it need your payment product or your terminal?
  • Who pays the processing fee on a tip, and can it be passed to the client?

One more thing worth doing before you commit. Ask a team member to walk the client side of the tip on a phone, end to end, and count the taps. If it needs a password reset before the client can leave $10, that is the flow you will be explaining at the desk every day.
